As introductory blurbs go, you don't get much better than this: "A love-song to pulp fantasy tales of yore, 70s synth-prog-landscape oddities, and forgotten places."

Sold!

Oh, we'd better tell you about the game this wonderfully evocative line is promoting now, eh. It's God of Blades, which funnels Infinity Blade's macho one-on-one fantasy premise into a side-scrolling action game.

It's out now on the New Zealand App Store, which means it'll be hitting the UK and US at midnight this evening.

Ruthless aggression

Mark went hands-on with a near-finished build of the game about a week ago and discovered it was "satisfying - and, at times, ruthlessly challenging - to play". So, we've got pretty high hopes for this final release.

In God of Blades, you take control of the Nameless King as he legs it from left to right, indulging in immortal combat with a succession of colourful foes.

It's all bolstered by a meaty and robust physics engine, a story worthy of the term 'epic', and some trippy backgrounds that call to mind the best / worst excesses of '70s album art. There's a suitably spacey synth soundtrack, too.

God of Blades is going for $4.19 on the New Zealand App Store, so it'll be available for £1.99 / $2.99 when it launches in the UK and US later tonight.
