The portable versions of boardgames have been ideal travel companions on trips for as long as I can remember.

There’s nothing quite like dropping a valuable piece under a seat or watching in horror as the carefully laid out board is thrown every which way by a bump in the road, especially if the pieces mainly consist of small, fiddly blocks.

So fans of top French boardgame Blokus will be happy to hear that the title has just been released on the App Store, bringing the Mensa Select award-winning boardgame to the iPhone for the first time.

This conversion closely follows the rules of the original 2000 game, with up to four players competing to place their Tetris-like blocks on the board in a certain way as to block-off their rivals.

Blokus for the iPhone has some advantages over the board-based original in that it also comes with a one-player Career mode, an option for colour-blindness and four different game variants, as well as Gameloft Live integration and local/online multiplayer.

We thought the mobile version was brilliant, awarding it a Pocket Gamer Gold Award a few weeks ago, so we have high-hopes for the iPhone version of this award-winning boardgame.

Blokus is available on the App Store now for £2.99/$4.99.
