I have to admit to having never heard of Blokus before today, so I did some research. Okay, I looked on Wikipedia.

Turns out this boardgame is quite a big deal, having won the Mensa Select and Teachers Choice Awards.

Now, Gameloft has announced the imminent release of a mobile version of “the most celebrated game of the century”, so the ignorant among us can see what all the fuss is about.

The rules are simple - each player must take it in turns to place one of their coloured Tetris-like tiles on a 20x20 game board. Each new piece must touch corners with another piece of the same colour, but no edges may meet. The winner is the person with the fewest playing pieces left once the game reaches its inevitable stalemate.

Blokus mobile features four versions of the game: Blokus Classic 4, Classic 2, Team Mode and Blokus Duo, in addition to a full on Career mode, which isn’t something you see every day in a boardgame conversion. There’ll also be a Hot Seat multiplayer mode, which you’d have expected given the nature of the games.

In an especially thoughtful touch, there’s even an icon-based mode for colourblind gamers.

It seems as if Gameloft has thought of everything. Keep checking back to see what we think of the game in our review.
