Journalists suspect practical joke

Blogger Jason Calacanis 'leaks' Apple tablet specs, says Farmville to be demoed

After the weeks of surprise snow, I have a theory on how the Met Office works. It releases 20 different forecasts to different media outlets, so it's wild guesses about the weather average out to being moderately accurate, some of the time.

Apple tablet rumours are going much the same way today.

Blogger Jason Calacanis has put out a list of his own predictions, which he insists are hot insider information.

If true, the tablet specifications he talks about are damn exciting (though the last info he'll be likely to ever receive from Apple). They're almost certainly not true, of course, but it's amusing to court the ideas he's laid out.

His recent tweets offer the following dubious gossip about the highly-anticipated Apple tablet:

  • OLED touchscreen
  • Solar panel charger on the back
  • Runs new iPhone OS variation
  • Multiple apps running at the same time
  • Thumb pads on each side (for mouse gestures)
  • Fingerprint verification (up to five profiles can be registered on one device)
  • HDTV tuner, a PVR and a chess game built-in
  • Rear and front cameras (quote: “u shoot what’s in front of you + yourself. Augmented video conferncing!”)
  • Wireless keyboard and monitor connection for external monitors
  • Wii-quality gaming

Some of it's likely to pan out, like maybe the OLED screen and variation of the iPhone OS, but fingerprint reader and rear mounted solar panel are practical jokes at best.

Although it's hard to place too much faith in his iSlate rumours after the thumb pads thing, Calacanis also claims that Zynga CEO Mark Pincus will go on stage tonight to demo a tablet version of Farmville.

Be here at 6PM GMT to find out the truth.

Yes. Spanner's his real name, and he's already heard that joke you just thought of. Although Spanner's not very good, he's quite fast, and that seems to be enough to keep him in a regular supply of free games and away from the depressing world of real work.
