The Battle of Polytopia has been downloaded over 20 million times on mobile now
Midjiwan’s The Battle of Polytopia has been around since 2016, releasing originally as a Flash game. Since then, it has been ported onto the Nintendo Switch, Steam, as well as on mobile. In fact, the game even has its own Polytopia Shop of Souvenirs in Stockholm. The iOS and Android version is the one that seems to have taken the world by storm as it has just hit the massive milestone of 20 million downloads.
The Battle of Polytopia has elements you’d usually see in desktop games since it’s a 4x strategy title, but it’s still found immense success on mobile. This is probably the result of being a purely skill-based game where the monetization bit involves only expansions and cosmetics and nothing to get ahead of others.
The game is constantly updated, each adding new features to the tribes and skill trees. This has resulted in Polytopia receiving multiple awards such as the Excellence In Gameplay title at the International Mobile Gaming Awards alongside overwhelmingly positive reviews on Steam.
Speaking about the success, Felix Ekenstam, Founder Game Designer at Midjiwan, said: “When I started making The Battle of Polytopia, I wanted to create the kind of game that I would enjoy, that wasn’t already available anywhere else. The idea was to build the best strategic game while blending it with the simplicity and accessibility you’d expect on mobile, but without all the aggressive monetization nonsense this audience hates.”
