Greystripe trumpets Opera Mini ad-funded games deal
1.6 million mobile games downloaded in 60 days, apparently
We've written about ad-funded mobile games firm Greystripe and its GameJump portal before, but the company doesn't just distribute free games through the website.
It signed a deal last year with browser maker Opera, to include a GameJump bookmark in its Opera Mini mobile browser. And it seems to be working well: Greystripe has just announced that Opera users have downloaded more than 1.6 million games and applications in the 60 days since the bookmarking went live.
It's a high-profile deal for Greystripe, since Opera doesn't embed bookmarks from just anyone - other sites on its homepage include MySpace, the BBC, Yahoo and the New York Times.
As we've previously seen with other portals that provide ad-funded games, there certainly seems to be plenty of demand from punters, although the long-term impact of such freebies on the growth of the premium mobile games market remains an issue for debate.
On that basis, it would be interesting to see more detailed figures such as how often people played those 1.6 million downloaded games, in order to judge really how successful the promotion was, but it's certainly a start.
