MobileRated fuelling one million mobile downloads a month

Free mobile games portal MobileRated has announced that it's generating more than one million downloads a month.

The site offers more than 500 mobile games, including free demos, ad-funded games, and complete freebies. According to president Richard Mosher, a wide variety of games are being downloaded too.

"Some people see the medium as only effective for simple, casual games but we've had great success with certain highly engaging action games too," he says. "Our downloads have grown 33% in a little more than three months, and I firmly believe we are only scratching the surface of the true marketplace today."

On the ad-funded side, MobileRated uses a technology called FreePlay from Kalador, which lets developers insert ads into their games, while offering gamers the option of paying for an ad-free version.

The caveat we always add with any ad-funded service is that the number of monthly downloads aren't the whole story - it's how often people play the games they've downloaded that shows whether they're high quality (and which will determine how much they can make from advertising).
