There's have been a couple of mechanically-based iPhone puzzle games to-date; notably the very successful, if simple Geared, and that old classic Pipe Mania.

Cogs seems to be operating on a higher level however.

Released in mid-2009 as a PC game, creator Lazy 8 Studios, has been porting it to iPhone over the past couple of months, and thanks to a hook up with publisher Chillingo, expects to have it out on the App Store in January 2010.

Using 3D graphics, the games has you manipulating the faces of mechanical contraptions to complete the various cog and steam pipe-based puzzles so the entire Heath Robinson artifact becomes functional, whether that means blowing up balloons or making the whole thing fly.

There will be 50 levels in total, and you can play them in either a timed mode or number of moves mode in terms of sliding the various elements around.

There's also an inventor mode for beginners to play around with the various gears, pipes, balloons, chimes, hammers, wheels and props that make up the puzzles.

Sound like gobbledygook to you? Then check out the video.
