But, remarkably, no mobile award this year

Following on from last week's announcement of the finalists for this year's Best of GC awards, we can now reveal the winners as voted by the event's 11-strong jury.

In the PSP category, God of War: Chains of Olympus somewhat predictably slashes through the competition. In justifying its choice, the jury feels the game "elevates the action genre to an art form: where other titles descend into brutish slaughter, God of War lends the battlefield a sombre beauty."

On the surface, the DS finalists listing may have seemed less bloodthirsty, but the rivalry was just as intense. The jury eventually opted for Eye Training (aka Vision Training). "Eye Training trains hand-eye co-ordination, reflexes, visual acuity – and is great fun as well. A non-prescription DS game to be taken daily," said the judges.

So far, no real surprises, then.

But you obviously can't have an awards ceremony without an element of the unexpected thrown in, and here that was provided for the mobile game category, where no winner was announced due to a lack of entries. A regrettable occurrence, and one we suspect is unlikely to repeat in years to come as the popularity of mobile gaming at GC increases.

Same time next year? Until then, PSP owners interested in God of War could check out our latest preview of the game. And in the interest of fairness, DS fans wishing to learn more about the award-winning Eye Training should look at our just-published hands-on with the game.
