Long-awaited starship simulator Star Command will finally surface on the App Store on May 2nd
For real this time
After a long and tortuous development - featuring a pair of Kickstarter campaigns, almost $200,000 in crowdfunded money, and a year of missed release dates - War Balloon Games's Star Command has a final, official release date.
The spaceship simulator will hit the App Store on May 2nd as a £1.99 / $2.99 Universal app. Android gamers will be able to get their hands on the game about a month later.
Star Command, if you've missed our previous coverage on the game, encourages you to build and control your very own intergalactic starship. You'll designate rooms; hire a crew; and bounce between planets and galaxies.
As this single-player story plays out, you'll meet alien travellers and inevitably do battle with them. This involves swapping cannon fire and shooting invaders in fast real-time strategic segments.
You can find out much more about the game in our hands-on Star Command preview.
In it, we said: "Star Command is not a deep strategy game, and it's not a game about science or diplomacy. But what it does focus on - feisty spaceship battles, and scrappy shootouts in the medical bay - are a real joy to experience."
"There's a compulsive thrill to fighting these battles - both in the predictable step-by-step process you take to defend and attack enemies, and in the chaotic upset when your last engineer is sucked out into the deep expanse of space."
We also published a handy FAQs feature on the game, in which we tell you everything you need to know about customisation, diplomacy, in-app purchases (or the lack thereof), and difficulty settings.
We'll have much more on the game - including our full review - up on the site later this week.
