Jasper’s Rocket is a game about keeping a cat in a rocket in the air for as long as possible. It’s going to be familiar if you’ve played a mobile game in the past few years.

Essentially it’s endless, and there are challenges to complete to push you further into the experience. Which you’re probably going to do for a bit.

It might not be the most original game on the App Store, but there’s enough going for it that it’s definitely worth having a look at.

Rocket cat

The controls are simple enough. You slide up on the screen to make your rocket fly, and tilt you device to send the rocket flying left or right.

There are coins to collect and bananas to pick up. Then you get little stations spread through the world where you can land and spend the bananas. That’s if you can manage it.

It’s not just the ground you need to keep away from though. You also need to avoid flying saucers and laser-firing cannons. Crashing into the stations is a bad idea as well.

The game starts off with a few training wheels in place, but the deeper you get into it the more you’ll find it releasing its grip. And the more difficult it gets, the more entertaining it gets.

It’s a little too kind to start off with, and while you are learning what you’re supposed to do, it’s not the sort of concept that needs as much explanation as the developer seems to think.

When things start to open up, you’ll find that you’re crashing more often, but having more fun at the same time.

The challenges the game sets are reasonably tough. There’s three to complete each level, and when you hit them you’ll unlock three more.

There’s usually a couple of easy ones and one tougher one. Hovering over the bananas to collect them is particularly tough, but getting the hang of it actually feels like a real achievement.

Cat’s pace

While other games in this genre are usually much less forgiving, Jasper’s Rocket is happy to let you wander into its world at a much slower pace.

Sometimes that pace is going to be too slow, but once it picks up you’ll find yourself enjoying things an awful lot more.

It’s not as taxing as some, it’s not as entertaining as some, and it’s not as good looking as some, but if you like cats, rockets, and sedate-ish flying, then this one is definitely worth tracking down.

Harry used to be really good at Snake on the Nokia 5110. Apparently though, digital snake wrangling isn't a proper job, so now he writes words about games instead.
