PSP sales are continuing their downward spiral, as the latest numbers from NPD Group for the month of January show.

According to NPD, 100,000 PSP units were sold for the entire month of January - that includes both PSPgo and PSP-3000.

That's a precipitous drop from January 2009 when Sony managed to sell 172,000 PSPs. Carry over the 1, cross the "t" and that comes to an abysmal 58 per cent drop from last year.

These are not good numbers for Sony, particularly since it was looking to PSPgo to reinvigorate lagging sales in the second half of 2009. Instead, sales continue to slide.

Even during the holidays, PSP didn't prove nearly as popular as the year before. December saw a respectable 654,000 PSPs sold. That's not so good, however, compared to the 726,000 units sold in December 2008.

Clearly PSP is in enormous trouble as DS garners four times the sales and iPhone gains momentum.
