Toys R Us announces Tabeo, a $150 Android tablet for kids
Comes preloaded with 50 apps
The tablet race heating up for the autumn is currently focusing on HD tablets and other high-end gaming slabs, but won't someone please think of the children?
US-based retailer Toys R Us announced that it is ready to do just that as it enters into the world of tablet gaming with its proprietary Android device, the Tabeo (pronounced tab-ee-oh).
Marketed specifically towards children, the 7" tablet comes preloaded with 50 apps (including Angry Birds and Fruit Ninja) and promises to be child-safe and child-friendly. It also boasts a library of 7,000 additional apps available in its online store.
Playground equipmentWhile certainly child-friendly, the hardware under the hood of the Wifi-only Tabeo is unlikely to set the hearts of many a mobile gamer aflutter.
Powered by a single-core 1GHz processor with a native resolution of 800 x 480 on its multitouch screen, the Tabeo is hardly a cutting edge gaming machine.
Still, it is undeniably an Android tablet and as such it features some nice touches like expandable memory (it comes with 4GB native, and is expandable up to 32GB), a front-facing camera, and HDMI output.
Whether the Tabeo will remain competitive with the new Kindle Fire (which retails for $159) remains to be seen, but it has given the MG dedicated Android gaming handheld some serious competition for the eyeballs and affection of pint-sized Pocket Gamers.
Toys R Us will launch the Tabeo on October 21st for $149.99, and it will only be available through the retailer.
