Rovio has confirmed via its Twitter account that the Android version of Angry Birds (released on Friday) received one million downloads on its first day.

We reported on Friday that the game was proving so popular that it managed to crash the GetJar servers. Despite these technical problems, the game still racked up 95,000 downloads in the first three hours.

Now the game has hit a million downloads. To put that in context, the current iPhone darling Cut the Rope took ten days to sell the same number.

Of course, the crucial difference between the two is highlighted by that expression, “sold.” Angry Birds’s success on Android isn’t just down to a popular brand and the high quality of the game – the fact that it’s free must have played a large part.

It seems the ad-funded approach (as well as going for an independent app store rather than Google’s own) is paying off handsomely for Rovio.

How long until Angry Birds on Android reaches the iPhone version’s seven million(ish) sales? Predictions in the comment section below.
