I suppose I have to admit that Zooloretto has entirely passed me by, though pocket gamers do tend to be more focused on digital games than physical ones (did you know they’ve made a boardgame out of Monopoly now? Whatever next).

But in the boardgame world, Zooloretto is something of a serial award winner, having won the prestigious Spiel Des Jahres award in 2007, been a finalist for the Game of the year in Finland, nominee for the Game of the Year 2008 in the USA...

(Deep breath)

...winner of the Japan Boardgame Prize 2007 as Best Foreign Game for Beginners, landed second place at the Suisse Game of the Year 2007, selected for the Bochumer Spieleliste and the Spieleblitzlichter 2007 in Austria and was two times winner of Best Game in the Family and Children categories of the Golden Geek Award 2007.

(And relax.)

Now it’s coming to the App Store thanks to developer SpinBottle Games and one of our favourite iPhone publishers, Chillingo.

The game revolves around a form of zoo management sim, in which players take it in turns to bring in the visitors by arranging, adding and moving their animals around the game board. Planning the expansion and operation of your zoo is the key to success in Zolloretto, while taking into account the facility’s available resources.

No clue as to when it’s likely to land on the App Store ark yet, but the gameplay video below looks pretty complete to us.

Yes. Spanner's his real name, and he's already heard that joke you just thought of. Although Spanner's not very good, he's quite fast, and that seems to be enough to keep him in a regular supply of free games and away from the depressing world of real work.
