It's no secret that studio Crystal Dynamics is busy working on Tomb Raider 8. The next instalment in the series is expected to come out on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 sometime in 2008. And only a gaming fossil would claim it's not coming to handhelds (and potentially mobile) as well.

But, as dug up by Trademork, we now might just have a name for the title and, with it, a clue as to which direction the developer is taking the series. Nine days ago Eidos filed to protect the name Tomb Raider Underworld in relation to, of course, a video game, which could well relate to Tomb Raider 8.

Further evidence this could be the case is provided by the game's plot, which Trademork suggests follows on from the story of Tomb Raider: Legend and relates in some way to the Mayan calendar. This calendar includes five 'dangerous days' when portals between the mortal realm and the underworld dissolve and evil spirits can travel back and forth as easily as it is to cross between EU countries these days.

Tomb Raider: Legend saw DS and PSP releases shortly after the home consoles, and the latest (most enjoyable) Tomb Raider Anniversary also came out on PSP. So we're obviously expecting Tomb Raider Underworld to make it to the handhelds, too, even if they remain unconfirmed at this stage.
