That book-to-film-to-game escalator keeps on rolling

Sierra prepares to open The Spiderwick Chronicles, DS-style

With an arty, grotesque atmosphere similar to the likes of Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events, and the deliciously macabre kids' tales from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and The Witches author Roald Dahl, the media spotlight turns to the slippery, magical, five volume world of The Spiderwick Chronicles.

Of course, the reason that the tales of what happens when nine-year-old twins Simon and Jared and older sister Mallory move to the rundown Spiderwick Estate, discover 'The Field Guide to Faeries' and have their eyes opened to the world around them will be of interest to Pocket Gamer is Sierra's announcement that it's making games (including DS) based on the forthcoming blockbuster film version.

Actual information about how the DS game will play out remains a closely guarded secret however. So, in the meantime, we'll just have to make do with researching a new vocabulary that consists of brownies, boggarts and the evil Mulgarath (to be played by Nick Nolte, wouldn't you know).

The game versions of The Spiderwick Chronicles are due to be released in conjunction with the film in February 2008.
