iPhone to be a major player in handheld gaming

Gordon Wood of Other Ocean, which recently revealed itself as the developer behind the Super Monkey Ball demo shown at Apple's iPhone SDK presentation, has been publicly extolling the virtues of iPhone as a gaming platform, predicting that it's set to become a big contender in the handheld market, echoing our very own opinion.

In a press release reported by Gamasutra, Wood explained that "Apple's SDK is extremely developer-friendly and the iPhone, with its accelerometer, is the perfect platform for Super Monkey Ball.

"The iPhone is going to be a major player in the handheld gaming market, and we're excited to be among the first to develop games for the device."

It's unclear thus far whether Other Ocean will develop the full commercial version of Super Monkey Ball, but it seems likely, with Sega's product development VP praising Other Ocean's demo version.

"We knew Super Monkey Ball could be a perfect game for the iPhone," he said. "All we needed was the right team to partner with to make it happen."
