Solo indie developer grapefrukt has revealed its latest project with Subpar Pool, an interesting mix of golf and billiards that intersects with wild and wacky levels sure to challenge and delight in equal measure. As the newest project after grapefrukt’s previous game, Holedown, Subpar Pool keeps up that oddball nature of all of their releases thus far and creates possibly the most unique Pool-themed game I have seen to this very day.

While the gameplay of Subpar Pool will seem familiar to anyone who has, well, played pool, there’s an important piece of the puzzle that will keep even the most diehard of players on their toes. This comes with the nature of each level that you’ll have to tackle to keep progressing within Subpar Pool, as each is randomly generated and not a single aspect of it is guaranteed.

That is, up until you progress to a certain point, where you will then begin to be able to pick certain cards out of a massive deck of what are essentially level modifiers. These can range from simple size increases of the level itself to things like conveyor belts, giant hills, portals, and many, many other mods that will complicate and enhance your levels.

That’s not all, though. While some of those mods are simple and just add a bit of fun to the level, there are others that will intrinsically make your game harder. A prime example is the Fast Run card, which will limit the amount of time you have to line up each shot, creating a lot more pressure that then turns the game into a bit of a brain-testing puzzler as opposed to a simple and fun pool-themed title.

If all of that sounds interesting to you, you can check out Subpar Pool when it launches on October 12th.
