SOCOM: US Navy SEALs Tactical Strike trailer breaks cover
New screens, too
True, we didn't exactly love the last SOCOM game but the forthcoming title in the series continues to hold our interest, mostly as a result of its heavy slant on strategy.
We've previously had a play with Tactical Strike and came away reasonably confident the game will deliver on its promise of an engrossing tactical experience, so it's reassuring to see it at E3 looking stronger still.
Set in Panama, the nine non-linear missions of the single-player mode (four-player ad hoc and infrastructure options are also offered) have been designed for authentic, reality-based combat.
Part of this approach comes down to the intelligence of enemies, which the developer claims has been enhanced as a result of realistic vision and hearing, sophisticated AI and the ability to communicate with each other (speaking of which, voice chat is supported in multiplayer matches).
The open nature of play, Sony believes, will encourage replay value, not least because improvement is rewarded with command equity, enabling players to upgrade their skills, equipment and weapons.
Naturally, we're hard to please puppies so we remain cautiously enthusiastic, but the trailer below shows you what the new screenshots above can't: a seemingly comprehensive, adaptable and fluid four-man squad-control system (redesigned specifically for PSP, we're told) together with an impressively detailed and atmospheric setting within which to command your US Navy SEALs, British SAS, French GIGN, German KSK, Australian SARS, Italian COL MOSCHIN, Korean 707th or Spanish UOE operatives.
But don't take our word for it – check it out yourselves:
