DSiWare, how do you backup or re-download??

Postby halljames on Wed May 20, 2009 9:38 am

I am thinking about getting a DSi but I wondered about the DSiWare stuff.

If I buy some games, using my credit card, what are they linked to. Do you create an account for DSiWare, or is linked to your DSi. Can I backup the games somehow in case of a failure, or perhaps a problem with the SD Card, or what if I get a new DSi to replace an old one.

What if I format my SD card, can I redownload anything I have previously purchased.

I can't find any info about how to go about this.

There's no personal account in terms of the DSi Shop so once you download a game to your DSi it's only saved locally.
The default option is that it's saved to the DSi's internal Flash memory but you can go into System Settings and manually copy your games over to your SD card.
Each game is locked to an individual DSi however so I don't think there's any legal way of updating previous save games to a new DSi

Whilst I can understand Nintendo want to protect their IP, there's no way I'm going to buy downloadable content like that until I can use the software on any of my DS Lites the same way I do with physical media (IE Game Karts).
