It doesn't matter how many amazing ideas you've got, if there's something wrong with the mechanics the player is engaging with, they're not going to care how smart the last level is.

That's something that Max: The Curse of Brotherhood understands. At first glance it's a really well put together but not exactly remarkable platformer. It sucks you into its world with the ease of its play, then once it has you it starts to throw some fascinating spanners into the works.

Max level

After accidentally casting a spell that gets rid of your little brother, it's up to you to try and save him from a giant chompy monster and a whole bunch of other miscreants. To do that you've got a few controls along the bottom of the screen.

[read more] http://www.pocketgamer.co.uk/r/iPhone/Max%3A+The+Curse+of+Brotherhood/review.asp?c=79069 Fri, 19 Oct 2018 15:05:17 GMT Review: Galerider review - "A slightly frustrating take on the Panzer Dragoon template" <img src="http://www.pocketgamer.co.uk/artwork/thumbs/na-rlnnm_gale-rider-ios-review-screenshot-the-main-menu_png_100.jpg" width="200" alt="Galerider review - "A slightly frustrating take on the Panzer Dragoon template"" border="0" align="left" style="margin:5px 10px 10px 0px;"> Sometimes the controls of a game can throw you off whack from the get-go. If they're not familiar, or if they run counter to the muscle memory you've gained over your gaming career, you can end up frustrated.

That's probably going to happen in Galerider. Once you've got to grips with them, they're great, but the first hour or so of the game you're going to make mistakes, and get frustrated, because the movements you need to make won't have settled into your brain yet.

It's worth sticking with though, because once everything clicks there's a really interesting mix of an over-the-shoulder runner and an arcade shooter waiting for you.

Harrier up

The game owes a lot to the likes of Panzer Dragoon Saga and Space Harrier. You're flying around on the back of a dragon, weaving through scenery and blasting down monsters as you do.

[read more] http://www.pocketgamer.co.uk/r/iPhone/Galerider/review.asp?c=79005 Fri, 19 Oct 2018 14:55:50 GMT Series Your Story Universe lets you befriend The Breakfast Club What Series Your Story Universe lacks in punctuation, it surely makes up for in its sheer abundance of loosely related shows.

Universal's latest foray into the world of interactive fiction is being touted as a platform for fresh new stories based around its most popular shows, such as – ahem – Vanderpump Rules.

Players will get the chance to create their own character, and they'll be challenged to make some mighty tough decisions along the way.

Upcoming stories will run the gamut from Saved by the Bell to Law & Order. To earn the rest, as we described in last week's guide, you'll need to play. And to do that you'll need a deck, but building one can be intimidating for a new player.

Luckily the Basic set hasn't changed since the early days of the game. So the best recipes for starter decks have barely changed too. We list one for each class below, all tried and tested. You'll see certain cards repeat over almost all of them. But nothing is set in stone so feel free to experiment with your own ideas too.

There's a code for each. Copy this, start the game and go into "my collection" and it should offer to build the deck for you. If you don't have all the cards, it'll offer suggestions for replacements too.

[read more] http://www.pocketgamer.co.uk/r/iPhone/Hearthstone%3A+Heroes+of+Warcraft/feature.asp?c=79034 Fri, 19 Oct 2018 09:31:20 GMT Hidden Folks is taking us on a trip to the seashore in this next update Well-loved monochrome puzzler Hidden Folks is getting a new expansion next week. We can count the number of notable releases in the genre since September 2016 on one hand.

Still, it remains a fun and mobile-friendly strategy sub genre with some downright classic games. You can build the most interesting experience in the world, but if you get your save points wrong and players keep losing progress because they have to put their phone down, you've definitely gone wrong somewhere.

Which is what makes F1 Mobile Racing so intriguing. It tries to bridge the gap between the casual and the hardcore, offering short-blast races that you can tailor to your own skill level. Sometimes it works really well, but other times it falls a little short.

A lot of that's down to the slightly wonky matchmaking, which will hopefully start to change now the game is out across the world. As it stands though, the game's got a great idea, it just needs to work on getting that idea out there.

[read more] http://www.pocketgamer.co.uk/r/iPhone/F1+Mobile+Racing/review.asp?c=79047 Thu, 18 Oct 2018 17:48:00 GMT Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 - 5 mobile alternatives Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 launched this week.
