You need both - the ability to pick up and play before/during a bus ride AND play for hours. This is why iOS/Android games need 2 key components:
1. multitasking - the ability to pause and hold while the user navigates other functions on the device. I know RAM is a major factor... but with the iPhone 5's 1GB of RAM and the newer Android devices with up to 2GB of RAM this should no longer be an issue on newer devices.
2. the ability to save at any given moment and pick up right from where you left off. Checkpoints/auto save is great - but save and quit upon close or manual save anywhere at any time is a must.
