You have to be hidden in order to pick locks undetected. With two fingers, try holding one finger on the lockpick, and use the other to rotate the lock gently either way until it gives (all while manipulating the direction of the lockpick with your other finger). It sounds more complicated than it actually is. I'm able to pick Silas's door on the first try now (without breaking any picks). :D
