Interesting article, and you answered the question spot on as well. This happens everytime something gets mainstream, be it ghost stories or word games, everyone wants to cash in.
I actually hadn't seen the MarbleHornet clips before, they seem to be just as good of a fake as The Blair Witch Project once was. Using the low budget tactics and a myth that people know about, it can scare pretty much anyone. Blair Witch fooled me, so I'm not falling for that again ;)
