I don't think these rumour is even worth spending a minute of thought on, it's just not going to happen. The iPad is fine, the 9.7 inch screen works well, it has advantages over mobile phones due to the extra space you get on a bigger screen, making a smaller tablet would be such a pointless waste of time and money for Apple. We already have "smaller iPads", they're called iPhones and iPod Touches.
