Adidas is planning to send its F50 miCoach cleats out onto the pitch this July as part of the world's first "smart soccer match".

The sportswear manufacturer launched its iPhone compatible Speed Cell accelerometer modules last year.

Designed to fit inside its own adiZero range of football boots (or, failing that, clip onto a set of laces) the unit is capable of monitoring and recording the wearer's foot movements.

This information can then be transferred to an iOS device, where miCoach can break down stats like speed, distance, and intensity of play.

Pitch perfect

According to Adidas, the coaches are geared up to track their players' every footstep with the new tech during the MLS All-Star Game, which will be played against British challengers Chelsea in Philadelphia on July 25th.

Our very own gymnastic guinea pig Jon Jordan put the Speed Cell sensors through their paces just before Christmas, so you can check out his analysis while you're waiting for the big game.

Once you're up to speed, have a look at the promo video below for a glimpse of what this live stat tracking lark might look like.
