Speaking to Joystiq, id Software found John Carmack has been discussing his studio's intentions regarding the iPhone.

"I've got a slate of iPhone titles, I expect to have an iPhone release every two or three months for the next year, as we go through our classics line, and I move over that I'd probably do Doom RPG, and we'd have to go with Wolfenstein RPG, and eventually do something Rage-themed on there," Carmack explains.

Equally big news emanating for the id Software scene is that Bethesda parent company ZeniMax has just bought Carmack's long-time independent house. Fortunately ZeniMax CEO Robert Altman seems just as happy with building on the studio's iPhone presence.

"ZeniMax will be fully supportive," he says in regard to id's continued push on the Apple platform. "We believe that market is a growth market and it's something we want to be involved in."

Ultimately id Software is going to run out of classic franchises to rehash for the iPhone, of course, but perhaps this new deal will allow it access to the IPs under the Bethesda banner - such as Fallout, Elder Scrolls and Home Alone (okay, probably not Home Alone)..

These games have been rumoured to be considered for iPhone conversions in the past, and given that it's taken a year for id Software and ZeniMax to hammer out the deals for the buyout, chances are this is where those rumours came from.

Yes. Spanner's his real name, and he's already heard that joke you just thought of. Although Spanner's not very good, he's quite fast, and that seems to be enough to keep him in a regular supply of free games and away from the depressing world of real work.
