One of the 'lone coder' success stories from the early days of App Store, it's taken Ethan Nichols almost two years to create a sequel to his $1 million iShoot artillery game.

Well, in the meantime, he did wander into the wilds to develop hunting sim Kim Rhodes' Outdoor Shooting.

Now however iShoot 2 is out, with the game making the most of the new iOS hardware as it builds on the basic Worms-style turn-based combat of the original.

iShoot everywhere

With that in mind, iShoot 2 is a universal app for iPhone and iPad, and also supports the Retina display of iPhone 4.

Yet instead of radical changes to the gameplay, Nichols has focused on overhauling the graphics and audio, with large scrolling and zoomable landscapes extending the game area.

The weapons system has been redesigned with more interesting ways of destroying your opponents such as cluster bombs, air strikes, and napalm etc, and you can upgrade your tank too.

Alongside the main Campaign mode, there's a quick Skirmish mode and a four-way multiplayer option, with Bluetooth added to the connectivity options.

iShoot 2 is out now for iPhone and iPad, priced $2.99, €2.39 or £1.79, and iShoot is free too.
