Quake III ported to iPod touch... with deathmatches!

No new device earns its gaming spurs until someone ports a version of Quake to it. This is Technology Fact.

The latest example is the revelation that Quake III has been ported to Apple's iPod touch. Canadian developer HermitWorks is responsible, although we should stress it's an experiment, rather than a commercial release.

As it explains on its blog: "We've been playing around with Quake III and Apple's iTouch. Scott grabbed the icculus source and with a few modifications had it running pretty quick."

Why should you get excited? Well, partly because the game uses the iPod touch's accelerometer to move, with you tapping the touchscreen to shoot.

But also because it supports multiplayer deathmatches! Presumably that's via wi-fi. The video below shows it in action, complete with music that's had us indulging in some Flat Eric style headbanging:
