O2 offers free iPhone... with a 24-month contract

O2 has announced a new tariff option that lets people get a free 8GB or 16GB iPhone if they sign up to a £34.26 or £44.05 monthly contract respectively.

There's a catch, though: the contracts last for 24 months.

"This new 24 month tariff option will meet the demand of customers who are looking for added value in exchange for committing to a longer contract," says marketing director Peter Rampling.

Which is all well and good - until now, you had to pay for an iPhone on those contracts. However, what happens if new iPhone models arrive in June?

There's been widespread speculation that Apple is preparing to introduce the next-generation iPhone alongside the consumer release of the iPhone 3.0 software this summer - with June the expected date.

The new tariffs are available from April 3rd, so we feel sorry for anyone who signs up, only to find their device superceded a couple of months later.

That said, O2 did offer some deals for owners of the original iPhone when it launched the iPhone 3G last year, so perhaps it has similar plans in mind when (or, indeed if) it gets the new model(s) - it's been rumoured that rival Orange is in the frame for an iPhone deal.

We have asked O2 for its thoughts on this, but the operator says that it can't speculate on future upgrade policies in the event of new iPhones.
