Apple: Pre-orders of iPhone 5 top two million in 24 hours

Apple has today announced that pre-orders of its newly announced iPhone 5 topped two million in just 24 hours - more than double what the iPhone 4S managed to achieve last year.

"iPhone 5 pre-orders have shattered the previous record held by iPhone 4S and the customer response to iPhone 5 has been phenomenal," Phil Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of worldwide marketing, said.

"iPhone 5 is the best iPhone yet, the most beautiful product we've ever made, and we hope customers love it as much as we do.'

Naturally, demand for the iPhone 5 greatly exceeds Apple's supply of the smartphone. This was clear last week when the Cupertino company flogged its entire initial stock of Verizon, AT&T, and Sprint iPhone 5s in under an hour.

If you're lucky, you'll get your mitts on an iPhone 5 come September 21st.
