Has LG started manufacturing iPhone 5 in-cell displays?

It's been suggested that the iPhone 5 will sport a fancy new in-cell display in order to help it shed some pounds, and it seems as if LG has started manufacturing it.

Says who? Says LG Display, the Korean company's massive screen manufacturing arm. That's who.

According to the company's chief executive, Han Sang-beom, "We just began mass production and we don't expect any disruption in supplies."

3 Become 2

So, what IS in-cell technology? As we reported back in July, it's a new method of creating touchscreen displays that effectively squishes the three-layer composition of a typical LCD unit into just two.

The touch-sensitive components are integrated into the LCD itself, resulting in a much thinner and clearer display.

Of course, LG hasn't specified that these in-cell displays are intended for the iPhone 5. With the launch of Apple's next gazillion-selling blower said to be less than a month away and LG's history of supplying Apple, however, we'd be rather surprised if it wasn't.

Keep an eye out for Judge Jon's final verdict on the iPhone 5 screen debate, by the way. Never mind in-cell - do we really want a 4-inch widescreen iPhone display?
