Exclusive rumour: Apple to call iPhone 5 press conference on 5 October

Retail launch on 12 October

Product: iPhone 5 | Manufacturer: Apple

In the sort of hush-hush operation whereby we'd have to kill you etc etc, it seems that Apple is gearing up for a slightly earlier than previously expected iPhone 5 launch.

Our inside source says there will be a press conference announcing the new hardware on October 5th, with retail release occurring a week later.

This broadly fits with the movement of recent rumours, which peaked with a - since proven erroneous - 21st October release date, bought forward to a October 15th date, according to Orange CEO Stephane Richard.

The symbolism works well too: iPhone 5, iOS 5, October 5.

What's in the box?

Of course, the hardware itself remains our main concern, with consensus suggesting iPhone 5 could be less of a radical leap than previously hardware, with considerable focus being placed on iOS 5.

Still, there will, no doubt, be enough things to get excited about, ranging from - perhaps - a better screen, cameras, antenna and - presumably - a new case design too.

only crazy people becomes part of this shitty iphone hype. people waste so much time on this useless talk. i mean come on , i agree its nice device but its not worth the hype. If we use some common sense and look around , there are at least 2-3 other phones much better than iphone already. Galaxy SII was better than iphone 4 in all aspects. Now I am pretty much sure iphone 5 would be no where near to Galaxy SII LTE. So guys chill n have a break. we should not blindly become part of this useless hype.

ps: i neither work for SAMSUNG nor apple. only diff is i am not blind fan of any tech gadget.

I really hope the iPhone 5 gets a bump in storage and we get 32gb/64gb models instead of the usual 16gb/32gb we've had for the last 2-3 years. This is a big deal for me, firstly there are loads of iPhone games which take up well over 1gb of storage, we have Gameloft games going for 69p at the moment and each one of those really eat into the memory, throw in Infinity Blade, EA's various titles (Fifa takes well over 1gb of space too) and suddenly the current storage is nowhere near enough. Add in your music, videos etc and the current 16gb/32gb models are just not enough.

So far all the rumours point at 16gb/32gb iPhone 5s yet again which is something I find really disappointing. Sure we'll have iTunes Match for music which in theory means you won't need to carry loads of music on your iPhone, but that's going to cost extra and you also need to be online which isn't exactly practical on a train, bus, when you're jogging etc. And nearly every 3G data plan is capped too, therefore I'd much rather have music stored directly on my device.

Godammnit I don't care about processors or screen size, I just want a 64gb iPhone lol

Sounds good to me, but should point out that Moscone Center (Apple's preferred site for these things) is booked for Oracle's Big Bash that day and the next... http://www.cmswire.com/cms/mobile/android-army-marches-past-iphone-in-european-sales-012714.php

Consensus? Keep up with the info. Two iPhones released, an updated iPhone 4(S) aggressively priced, and the all new iPhone 5 (lighter, bigger screen, teardrop design, aluminum back, etc).
