Hidden Gems: 154 great iOS games that you forgot existed [61-90]

iOS

This is the third instalment in a five-part series looking at 150 hidden iOS gems. The mathematicians among you will have already worked out that 150 divided by five is 30. That's why there are 30 entries in this instalment. Click on the following hyperlinks for Volumes I, II, IV, and V.

If your brain ever suggests to you that it would be a good idea to write a feature about 150 games, my advice is to find a good saw, remove the top of your skull, and lean forward over a pond or canal.

But so far it's been worth it. Delving into the five-year-deep archives of the App Store has enabled us to introduce more recent iOS owners to the hits that they missed. It's also given us an opportunity to indulge in the kind of nostalgia that's only possible in a world where three years feels like a long time.

But, more than that, it's allowed us to reach into the darkness, take the games that were never hits but should have been by the hand, and lead them blinking into the light.

Now, it's up to you to make sure they don't go back in there.

Infinight
By LambdaMu - buy on iPhone and iPad

You're lost and clueless, in a strange place full of vortices and other perils. Also, you can't see. Infinight is a creepy, nicely presented, and, above all, innovative puzzler.

Infinity Field
By ForzeField Studios - buy on iPhone or buy on iPad This top-down wireframe shooter boasts oodles of upgrades, modes, and other features, as well as multiplayer. It's essentially Geometry Wars, but more so.

Isoball
By Zattika - buy on iPhone or buy on iPad

Amazingly, Isoball is a game about moving a ball that doesn't rely on accelerometer controls. Instead, you have to build a little course for your ball in this gently pleasing puzzler.

Jet Car Stunts
By True Axis - buy on iPhone and iPad

This blisteringly fast, impeccably made mid-air racer is the game Geoff Crammond's Stunt Car Racer could have been.

Junk Jack
By Pixbits - buy on iPhone and iPad Minecraft's great, isn't it? Well, so is Junk Jack, because it's largely identical, only with cutesy pixel-art graphics and 2D presentation.

Just Fillin'
By playtoniq - buy on iPhone Just Fillin' is a modern, innovative, sparsely presented take on Qix in which you have to hold your finger on the screen to make bubbles grow.

Kahoots
By Honeyslug - buy on iPhone This puzzler, which is part-Lemmings and part-LittleBigPlanet, is worth checking out partly for its gameplay but largely for its winning charm and humour.

Kami Retro
By Paw Print Games - buy on iPhone or iPad Paw Print's squintingly bright and colourful puzzle-platformer is too short and too repetitive, but it looks great and it involves some intelligent use of the touchscreen.

Karoshi
By YoYo Games - buy on iPhone and iPad If you're a gamer, then you may have been accused of playing murder simulators at some point in your life. Prove your critics wrong by playing this suicide simulator.

Kil.a.ton
By Dot Matrix Interactive Design - buy on iPhone How many would die in Worms if everybody fired whenever they felt like it rather than taking turns? If this Worms clone with a twist is any guide, a ton.

Kingdom Rush
By Ironhide Game Studio - buy on iPhone oriPad Kingdom Rush stands out among the trillion or so tower defence games on the App Store thanks to its exemplary polish and rich gameplay.

Kosmo Spin
By Simogo - buy on iPhone and iPad The iOS ecosystem is home to some rich and creative games, like Year Walk. Sometimes, however, all you want to do is run around a little planet heading sports balls.

Labyrinth 2
By Illusion Labs History has shown us that accelerometer-based games are about 99 percent less fun than developers used to think they were. Labyrinth 2 has no time for history.

Lazy Raiders
By Namco Networks - buy on iPhone and iPad Originally available on XBLA, Lazy Raiders is an ingenious puzzler in which you move the world so that an archaeologist doesn't have to take a step.

Mage Gauntlet
By RocketCat Games - buy on iPhone and iPad Another corker from RocketCat, Mage Gauntlet is an irreverent retro-RPG where numbers and grinding are traded for wry humour and accessibility.

Max and the Magic Marker
By Electronic Arts - buy on iPhone or iPad Like a simplified Scribblenauts for the lexically challenged, this neatly presented and inventive platformer encourages you to draw on the screen to create useful objects.

Meteor Blitz
By Alley Labs - buy on iPhone The clever twist in this otherwise-unremarkable Geometry Wars clone is that your fuel and firepower are both depleted when you move. It makes all the difference.

MiniSquadron
By Supermono Studios - buy on iPhone Do you remember BIP? Probably not - you're too young. Well, side-on dogfighting game MiniSquadron is a modern take on that underappreciated classic.

Monster Dash
By Halfbrick Studios - buy on iPhone and iPad Fruit Ninja and Jetpack Joyride may pay Halfbrick's bills, but this early endless-runner from the Aussie studio starring studio mascot Barry Steakfries shouldn't be overlooked.

Monster Pinball
By Matmi - buy on iPhone or iPad With Monster Pinball, Matmi casts off the dreary garb of reality to create an impossible, imaginative, joyous version of pinball that can only exist in the game dimension.

Monster Soup
By Kieffer Bros - buy on iPhone and iPad A puzzler in which you have to match coloured objects. How original. And yet Monster Soup stands out due to its fluid touchscreen controls and its personality.

Mos Speedrun
By Physmo - buy on iPhone and iPad If you liked Super Meat Boy but couldn't work out why it was being so mean to you, you may enjoy the gentler, friendlier gameplay of Mos Speedrun.

newtonica2
By Fieldsystem Inc - download on iPhone Challenging, novel, and palpably beautiful, newtonica2 is the kind of game for which touchscreens were made.

Node.Hack
By 4gency - buy on iPhone and iPad One of the more arcadey and accessible hacking games, Node.Hack could be described as 'like Pac-Man for amoral brainiacs', and just has been.

Non Flying Soldiers
By Blue Shadow Games - buy on iPhone and iPad Polished modern-day Lemmings-alike Non Flying Soldiers is what Angry Birds would be like if everything in Rovio's game were different (except the birds.)

Numba
By Cobra Mobile - buy on iPhone or iPad If you can count and touch things, you can play Numba. With this ingeniously simple casual-puzzler, Cobra was among the first to demonstrate how effective touchscreen controls could be.

Orbital
By bitforge - buy on iPhone or iPad How many balls can you fit in a neon rectangle? Play Orbital to find out. Oh, and play it on Gravity mode for maximum enjoyment.

Oscura
By MTV Networks - buy on iPhone and iPad Oscura has two things going for it: some genuinely stunning Limbo-style presentation, and a mostly successful gesture-based control scheme.

Paladog!
By FazeCat - buy on iPhone The eponymous hero is a dog on a horse. He serves as your general in this remarkably fluid, well-balanced, and accomplished castle vs castle game.

Parachute Ninja
By ZeptoLab - buy on iPhone Before ZeptoLab was famous for making Cut the Rope, it was not very famous for making Parachute Ninja. It's not as inventive as its Om Nom-starring successor, but it's nearly as good.

It goes without saying that there are bound to be literally trillions of other games that could have qualified for this list. It would be immensely useful if you could point out how thick we are for omitting them by sharing your suggestions in the comments section below.
