Admittedly the classic RPG 'roguelike' NetHack perhaps isn't one of the most popular computer games around today, but it's still one of them most interesting.

The original game was released in 1987, as a new take on the dungeon crawler style of role-playing game based on the even more classic title from 1980 called Rogue. But what's particularly interesting about NetHack is that it's open source, and it's still being added to and developed today.

The latest addition to its impressive legacy is an iPhone adaptation, rather obviously titled iNetHack. This handheld version is built upon the 3.4.3 version, originally released in 2003. It follows the usual objective of taking on the role of a fantasy character and hacking and slashing your way through the many levels of the dungeon in search of the much fabled Amulet of Yendor.

While its 8-bit gaming heritage is still very apparent (which some will see as a definite plus point) hopefully iNetHack will retain its parents open source status, and continue to evolve on Apple's handheld.

And best of all, it's free. So hit the 'Buy It!' button to a head on over to the App Store and help yourself to a rich slice of retro gaming goodness.

Yes. Spanner's his real name, and he's already heard that joke you just thought of. Although Spanner's not very good, he's quite fast, and that seems to be enough to keep him in a regular supply of free games and away from the depressing world of real work.
