Tanks Mobile: Battle of Kursk throws you in the midst of WW2 mayhem
|

Although the first tanks to tear up the battlefield were deployed in WW1, it was WW2 which saw the armoured vehicles truly revolutionise modern warfare. Published by Hong Kong’s PopPace, Tanks Mobile: Battle of Kursk gives you the chance to collect, command and confront the most fearsome tanks of the Second World War on the battlefield. The newly-launched game takes its name from the explosive engagement between Soviet and German forces in 1943 that saw the most tanks ever deployed in a single battle – and now you can relive the experience (from the safe, comfortable confines of your mobile, obviously).

As you progress through the various chapters in Tanks Mobile: Battle of Kursk you’ll traverse theatres of war across Europe, unlock new tanks, upgrade existing ones and recruit a few famous faces to helm your units. There are 50 tanks to collect, including classics like the famous Sherman and the formidable Tiger. There are also a few fictional and prototypical tanks to add to your platoon as well.

During gameplay, you strategically select the units and formation of your platoon before entering head-to-head split-screen battles against either enemy NPC tanks or fellow online players. Successfully defeating your foes brings experience to aid levelling-up, and resources to use for upgrades.

We spoke to the PopPace team about what to look forward to in Tanks Mobile: Battle of Kursk.

Pocket Gamer: What do you think Tanks Mobile offers that you can’t get from other battle-themed titles?

PopPace: In most games, players assume the role of driver or an individual unit – here they can enjoy being a commander. We also have some tanks available that only exist in movies or as blueprints that we bestow different abilities upon according to their design.

What’s the difficulty curve in Tanks Mobile?

The first real challenge comes once you reach around level 18. The enemies become stronger and your damage-per-second (DPS) is not high enough to take them out quickly. Unlocking the 'Skip Battle' function or upgrading your power will help greatly. It’s also wise to invest resources in a single tank in the early stages until you face the 'disarm' tanks. Then you’ll need to have a deputy DPS tank alongside a 'disarm' tank so you can disarm the enemy first.

Which aspects of the game do you feel will appeal most to players?

The collection of WW2 tanks will be the most appealing feature. Whether it’s the German Tiger Legion or the combined forces of the Sherman and the Tiger, here you have the chance to realise your dreams. Secondly, the tactics you must use to win. Whether you’re up against strong enemy NPCs or other players, victory is achieved through applying different tactics.
