Over the years, more and more platformers have piled onto the App Store.

Developers of iOS platform games have gradually managed to replicate precise physical controls on a touchscreen (almost), so there are now plenty of quality, colourful, and inventive platforming titles from which to choose.

We thought we'd give you a helping hand with that last part. So, here are ten of the best. Thank us later.

Random Heroes
By Ravenous Games - buy for iPhone and iPad

Random Heroes is a lot like League of Evil. Both titles feature gorgeous pixel-art graphics, fast-paced gameplay, and tight controls that rival physical buttons for precision.

Ravenous Games's latest title is more action packed than its abovementioned predecessor, though. There are ten different weapons to get your mitts on, for starters.

Mikey Shorts
By BeaverTap Games - buy for iPhone and iPad

Mikey Shorts is packed full of content. Each of its 84 levels is filled with gold coins, hidden golden shorts, and unlockable costumes.

Then, there are Game Center achievements to unlock, bosses to beat, times to smash, and more. Basically, there's a ton of replay value here.

Rayman Jungle Run
By Ubisoft - buy for iPhone and iPad

If you're looking for a PSone-esque Rayman experience on your iOS device, Jungle Run won't be for you.

If, on the other hand, you're looking for an extremely colourful and entertaining auto-run platformer, check it out.

There are 40 levels to master and lots of Game Center leaderboards to challenge your friends on.

Waking Mars
By Tiger Style - download for iPhone and iPad

We've loved Waking Mars here at Pocket Gamer Towers ever since we discovered that it's an intriguing mix of Metroid, '70s sci-fi, and gardening.

It's set in space, where your basic aim is survival. In order to do this, you have to plant seeds and master an alien ecosystem.

LostWinds 2: Winter of the Melodias
By Frontier Developments - buy for iPhone and iPad

In this second instalment of the award-winning LostWinds franchise, you're tasked with helping a young boy find his lost mother and overcoming the shadowy hand of Balasar.

Luckily, you can call upon all of the powers you learnt in your first adventure, some new ones, and an ability that allows you to flip between summer and winter on the fly.

Lego Harry Potter: Years 5-7
By Traveller's Tales - buy for iPhone and iPad

Harry Potter's second iOS adventure is a lot closer to its console counterpart than its predecessor was, mainly thanks to new graphics and control schemes.

Naturally, this title allows you to relive the events of J.K. Rowling's final three Hogwarts-based books (and the franchise's final four movies).

League of Evil 2
By Ravenous Games - buy for iPhone and iPad

League of Evil was the game that convinced us platformers really could work on a buttonless device like the iPhone and iPad.

This sequel features equally excellent controls, as well as brand-new hand-drawn animations and 100 fresh levels.

Run Roo Run
By 5th Cell - buy for iPhone and iPad

Run Roo Run is another of those auto-run platformers, and that's a good thing. It means you can concentrate on avoiding the many obstacles and hazards you face throughout the game's 420+ levels.

You aim is to travel across Australia from Perth to Sydney in order to rescue your kidnapped Joey.

Sonic CD
By Sega - buy for iPhone and iPad

It's almost impossible to compile a list of platformers without mentioning Sega's infamous blue hedgehog. The guy's an icon, after all.

This classic title has been completely re-imagined for Apple's iOS devices, and features Retina display-compatible graphics, online leaderboards, and Game Center achievements.

One Tap Hero

By Chillingo - buy for iPhone and iPad

An evil wizard has turned your lovely girlfriend into a cute and cuddly teddy bear. Your job is to rescue her. How? By collecting stars and using their power to change her back.

As its name suggests, you control this game entirely with taps. It couldn't be simpler.
