Five mobile games to unleash your inner superhero

Nothing captures the imagination like a superhero. In the latter part of the 20th century, they made the leap from comic books to the big screen, with multimillion dollar blockbusters like the Super Man, Spiderman and X-Men franchises, and from there, it was a short leap to the world of gaming.

Today, there is a bigger choice of superhero games than ever, but the world has not stood still and many of these are now available to mobile gamers. Here are five of the best that you can download on your Android or iOS device.

1) Batman: Arkham City Lockdown

The Caped Crusader is the archetypal superhero and has spawned more games than any other. There are hits and misses within the Arkham series, but this entry from Warner Brothers definitely falls into the latter category. The gameplay evokes memories of Infinity Blade, and is stunning in its simplicity. Combine that with breathtaking graphics and a whole host of bonus characters from Batman’s colourful history, including Robin and Poison Ivy, and you have an instant classic.

2) Captain Rizk

Not every superhero game is just about stalking the mean streets and saving the world from evil megalomaniacs. The online casino sector has become one of the most important areas in gaming, and Captain Rizk cleverly brings superhero gaming to the growing band of online gamblers. This new brand of superhero can be found at the Rizk Casino, and a review by independent comparison site Casino Countdown was full of praise for the unique spin Captain Rizk brings to traditional casino games.

3) Saints Row 2

When Saints Row was first released on PC, it had a similar effect on Superhero games as Condorman did on the movies. For a genre that sometimes takes itself a little too seriously, some comic relief is always welcome, and the game is willing to make fun of every superhero cliché you can think of. The second iteration brought the Saints Row to mobile gamers and it became an instant hit. It’s not complex and the graphics are basic, but for good old-fashioned fun, there is no better way to unleash your superhero powers on the go.

4) Lego Batman: DC Superheroes

Take an iconic Danish manufacturer of children’s building blocks and mix it with the world’s favourite superhero and what do you get? Logically, the answer should be a mess, but like any great Lego creation, the whole is sometimes greater than the sum of its parts. The Lego Movie exceeded all expectations among even the harshest film critics, and Lego Batman: DC Superheroes is arguably the most complete superhero game of them all. Batman and Robin are joined by other famous names from the DC universe, including Wonder Woman, Superman and Green Lantern to protect Gotham City from The Joker and Lex Luthor. There’s something here to appeal to gamers of all ages.

5) Batman vs Superman Who Will Win

If the cooperation of all these DC names in the Lego game seems a little to saccharine, Warner Bros have the perfect antidote. The title poses a question that superhero fans have been asking for generations, and there is only one way to find the answer. The game was released to accompany Dawn of Justice, but don’t be put off by the indifferent reviews the film received. Taken on its own terms, this is a stunning game that offers unusual depth for a mobile app. The ability to play as either Batman or Superman provides two different perspectives and multiple ways to explore the environments of Metropolis and Gotham. One thing is certain, there can be only one winner – and this is the only time you are likely to see either of the most famous names in the superhero genre come out second best.
