I don't mean to alarm you, but it looks like you're playing a match-stuff zombie puzzler

I'm not alarmed, don't worry. This is Zombie Match Defense. And you're right, it's a match-stuff zombie puzzler with some slight tower defence leanings.

Is this the part where you tell me it's not as generic as it sounds?

I wish it was. I really do. This is a remarkably well polished game, with cute graphics and controls that just work. But the core of the game just feels underwhelming. Slide zombies, match brains, try not to let anyone past your scientists.

Hmmmmm, does it add anything interesting?

Well, as you play through the game you'll come across different types of zombies. Some can move diagonally along the grid of brains, others take a couple of matches to kill. Then there are fat zombies that won't move when you try and swap the brains they're gnawing on.

So you're matching brains?

That's the idea yeah. The screen is full of a variety of different types of brains across five different lanes. Match them horizontally or vertically to clear them. If a zombie is on a brain you clear, it dies. Or re-dies I guess.

And there are power-ups?

How did you guess? There are. You unlock them with zom-bucks as you work through the levels. You can freeze zombies in place, use a hook to pull them back to the start of a row, and equip your scientists with shotguns to defend themselves, to name but a few.

It doesn't sound like it's got much going for it

I mean, there's nothing particularly wrong with Zombie Match Defense. It all works well enough, and the puzzling is reasonably challenging, especially when you unlock the tougher difficulty settings. It's not a bad game, but it's really not a memorable one.

Is it fun?

Er, sort of. If you've become immune to the charms of matching puzzlers then it'll do nothing to free you of that malaise. If you've never squelched brains together in chains of three or more then you'll probably have a perfectly nice time while you're playing it.

I take it this isn't one to spend money on then?

Maybe two years ago, but there are so many match-things puzzlers on the App Store, and so many that add something new to the template, that Zombie Match Defense doesn't really cut the brain mustard. Is brain mustard a thing? Either way, this is one for die-hard puzzle lovers only.

Zombie Match Defense - Oh so very generic

A well put together, but ultimately pretty drab match-stuff puzzler
