Rumour: World of Warcraft crusading onto iPhone
|

Online role-playing epic World of Warcraft has chained millions to their home computers, but new streaming technology has the potential to put the addictive online game in your pocket.

Vollee, a company working on PC-to-mobile streaming technology, may have struck an agreement with Activision Blizzard to stream the game onto iPhone. Kotaku reports developments that show the game fully functioning on an iPhone, though it's far from an official confirmation.

We did contact Vollee last year prior to GDC 2008, the company eager to demo its "3G mobile games service already supported by Activision." While that demo never took place, it does highlight a relationship exists or existed between Vollee and Activision Blizzard. Today, however, Vollee's website is down and Blizzard is remaining mum on the subject.

It's worth noting that past rumours of World of Warcraft being adapted to platforms other than PC have proven false. When asked about a potential PlayStation 3 version of the game, Blizzard stated the success of the game on PC downplayed any need to port it to another platform.

That reasoning is likely to hold for an iPhone version. While technically feasible (Vollee has successfully streamed simulation Second Life to the device), it seems unlikely that Activision Blizzard would move forward with it.
