Wargaming calls World of Tanks Blitz's F2P model 'free-to-win', talks about upcoming content

The Gold Award-winning World of Tanks Blitz is proof that free to play gaming doesn't have to be a dreadful or costly experience.

PocketGamer.biz caught up with World of Tanks Blitz producer Dmitry Yudo to talk about the game and its business model.

"We have our own vision about the way free-to-play games should be designed," said Yudo.

"We call it the free-to-win business model or 'free-to-play done right'."

The key to this, said Yudo, is to leave it up to players whether to spend their time or real cash to generate in-game currency.

Whereas other free to play game issue time penalties in a thinly veiled attempt to frustrate players enough to want to pay up to skip the wait.

"In Blitz there are no timers and players don’t have to pay for energy or fuel to proceed playing.

"We eliminated all the obstacles, and players may choose for themselves when and for how long they want to play. You can pay for extra comfort, but we sell no overpowered, ultimate weapon," Yudo said.

Yudo also talked about how the team behind Blitz had to shrink the World of Tanks experience down from PC when porting to mobile.

This involved a lot of playtesting and trying different game modes to capture the feel of the PC game but ensure its suited to mobile gaming.

He also talks about the upcoming Android version, and the new content that Wargaming will be adding to Blitz in the coming months.
