Wobblers review - An arcade game that mixes the subtle and the chaotic

| Wobblers

Wobblers is an interesting concept. At once frantic and subtle. It takes a while to get used to its beat, but when you do you'll find something that feels pretty fresh.

It's not the most engaging game on the App Store, but it does make sure you've always got something to do.

With 3000 challenges and a whole lot to unlock, it's designed to suck you in and keep you held in its reasonably cavernous innards. But does it work?

Wobble it

The game sees you controlling a floating platform. Press on the left of the screen and it moves to the left, press on the right and it moves to the right.

So far so simple, but the aim of the game is to keep one of the titular wobblers balanced on the platform. And that's far from easy.

You'll start with one in position, and then you'll be bombarded by rocks, meteors, electric barriers, mines, and all manner of other things.

There are also other Wobblers falling down the screen on parachutes. So if you lose your original little friend you can try and grab another one. And trust me, you're going to need to.

Power-ups help you along the way. One encases your Wobbler in armour, another gives it wings. There's a magnet as well that sucks up the coins and stars that litter the levels.

You're not just chasing your high score here though. There are a whole bunch of challenges to complete, one at a time, as well. You might need to keep your original Wobbler for a set amount of time, or grab a set amount of stars.

Just a little bit

The juxtaposition between the chaos of the shower of obstacles, hindrances, and creatures and the subtlety you need to control the platform with makes for an intoxicating mix.

It's easy to accidentally catapult your wobbler into nothingness, leaving you scrabbling to catch another before your run ends.

The controls do sometimes leave a little to be desired, and you're likely to spend a lot of your time rubbing along the sides of the screen in desperation.

But all the same, this is an arcade blast that tries to do things a little differently. It doesn't always work, but you'll have a giggle when it does.

Wobblers review - An arcade game that mixes the subtle and the chaotic

Wobblers mixes a couple of ideas together pretty well, and while there are problems, it's still worth a crack
