As time moves on, cultural sensitivities change and forms of entertainment that were once acceptable fall out of favour. Bull-fighting and fox-hunting, for example, used to be perfectly wholesome pastimes. Now they're not.

For that reason, the whack-a-mole genre of video game is due a makeover. Nobody wants to hit small blind mammals with a mallet these days, so iPhone game developer Koolfing has substituted moles with something more palatable.

Birds.

Whack'N Roll, Koolfing's twist on the whack-a-mole formula, sees you bopping birds of different colours on the head in a range of different ways.

Classic Push to Whack mode entails whacking birds until you can't whack any more. Classic Whack mode tells you how dexterous you are, Kawashima-style. Adventure mode lets you play through 45 levels across three different worlds. Finally, Competition mode lets you compete with other whackers.

On the subject of competitions, Whack'N Roll promoter Games-Fed has arranged a competition to win an 32GB wi-fi iPad and a $15 iTunes voucher. The first runner up gets a solar charger and a $25 iTunes voucher, the second gets a backup battery and a $15 voucher, and the third to the sixth each get a $15 voucher.

To enter, you need to prove your whacking abilities by downloading the game. Here's how the competition works:

  • First, you have to subscribe to the Whack'N Roll competition using the IG subscription interface. To this end, you have to be logged into OpenFeint and then to use a dedicated subscription menu item. You'll be asked to provide your e-mail address and to confirm that you're 18 or over. The e-mail address you register with must be the same as the address you used to register with Pocket Gamer.
  • Once registered, you get access to the competition menu item. You can play the Competition game mode as many times as you like. The system keeps your best score and stores it in an OpenFeint specific leaderboard. You can check the Whack'N Roll OpenFeint competition leader board at any time.

The competition is worldwide and runs until Friday 17th September.
