Incoming! Our 9 most anticipated iPhone, iPad, and Android games for February and beyond
|

It's been a while since we did one of these monthly Incoming! features. That's mainly because of last month's epic look ahead to the whole of 2014.

Now's the time to stop looking so far ahead, though, and concentrate on what's heading to our mobile devices over the coming weeks.

The following nine games should be appearing on an iPhone, iPad, or Android phone near you soon.

Some we know are imminent. Some will inevitably be delayed. That's just the way it goes.

All look pretty darned interesting, mind, we're sure you'll agree.

Fright Fight
By APPSolute Games - heading to iPhone and iPad in February

It might be inspired by Smash Bros., but this arena brawler will feature a slightly darker aesthetic than Nintendo's family-friendly mascot would be comfortable with.

Besides its mixture of horror, fantasy, and steampunk elements, Fright Fight will contain a rich RPG system. If the prospect of laying the smackdown on a Yeti or hitting the Grim Reaper with a multi-hit combo doesn't excite you, then frankly you're beyond hope.

Expect 1v1, team, and free-for-all brawling for one or more players - though the emphasis is clearly on real-time online play.

Wayward Souls
By RocketCat Games - heading to iPhone and iPad in late February; heading to Android later

After a long wait, RocketCat is finally submitting The Game Formerly Known as Wayward Saga to Apple this month.

Wayward Souls is a kind of spin-off of the developer's splendid dungeon-crawler Mage Gauntlet. RocketCat utilises the same engine here, but pushes things in a more roguelike direction, with random dungeons and permadeath upping the hardcore factor significantly.

Those of an epic hacky-slashy disposition should be getting very excited around about now.

Bug Heroes 2
By Foursaken Media - heading to iPhone and iPad on February 20th

The first Bug Heroes was a largely successful mash-up of tower defence and third-person shooter mechanics. It's more than three years old now, though.

What we need is a sequel, and Foursaken Media is keen to oblige. With Bug Heroes 2, the North Carolina dev shifts in closer for a more focused and visually opulent third-person action game, albeit with a kind of squad-based tactical element.

It looks stunning, and with MOBA-like online competitive and co-operative multiplayer on the cards, this could be a real crowd-pleaser.

Trolls vs Vikings
By Megapop Game - heading to iPhone and iPad on February 26th; heading to Android some time after

If you found yourself wholly unimpressed by PopCap's tinkering with the formula in Plants vs Zombies 2, then you might want to keep an eye on this little treat from Norway.

The maker of Trolls vs Vikings clearly tips its horned helmet to PvZ, with a similarly cartoony and line-based approach to tower defence.

However, after a brief hands-on with the game last year, we realised that this one's going to be a lot more involved, with movable towers, resource gathering, and online multiplayer.

A few words of warning, though: it's going to be freemium. So, if that was your biggest issue with PvZ 2, you might have to keep on looking.

Mines of Mars
By Crescent Moon - heading to iOS and Android soon

A wonderfully atmospheric-looking platform adventure with a vibe that encompasses Super Metroid, Spelunky, and lots of other ace examples of the genre.

Mines of Mars features a procedurally generated world in which you can dig your way through a buried Martian civilisation. If that wasn't tantalising enough, co-op multiplayer is also promised.

Also, jet packs.

Frozen Synapse Red
By Mode 7 - heading to iPad and Android soon

This chunky expansion of the excellent squad-based strategy game Frozen Synapse has been out on PC for approaching two years now, and we know that Mode 7 is working on porting it across to tablets.

Will it be a standalone game or an update to the existing game? We're not sure. Given its expansion pack origins, though, we'd guess the latter.

Either way, Frozen Synapse Red will boast an all-new campaign, co-operative multiplayer, and a new riot shield-bearing unit.

Devious Dungeon
By Ravenous Games - heading to iPhone and iPad at the end of February

Ravenous Games claims to be going back to its action-platformer roots with Devious Dungeon, which should effectively mean League of Evil-with-swords.

That's enough to get us all hot and bothered. How about you?

The LoE games (not to mention Random Heroes) are some of the toughest yet tightest platformers on mobile, so we have high hopes for this one.

The Voyage
By Mojo Bones - heading to iOS at the end of February; heading to Android in April

Remember The Curse? Oh, come on, it wasn't that long ago. About 18 months, actually. It was a really neat and varied puzzler filled with tangram conundrums, riddles, block-sliding posers, and more.

It looks like Mojo Bones has a similar design concept in mind for The Voyage, a familiar-looking multi-discipline puzzler. This time, however, the developer is tying all these disparate elements together through a distinctly light-hearted nautical theme.

You can never have too many pirate games, in our experience. Yargh, and all that.

Autumn Dynasty Warlords
By Touch Dimension - heading to iPad and iPhone at the end of February

The first Autumn Dynasty was one of those rare real-time strategy games that actually felt like it had been designed for mobile (or preferably tablet), rather than a PC game shoehorned in with a shoddy touch interface.

So, follow-up Autumn Dynasty Warlords more than earns its place on this list, even if its maker is trying our patience having missed its November release slot. Patience is all well and good in feudal Chinese warfare, sure, but it's a bitch in real life.

Expect a greater emphasis on empire building and a non-linear single-player campaign in this sequel.

Jon Mundy
Jon Mundy
Jon is a consummate expert in adventure, action, and sports games. Which is just as well, as in real life he's timid, lazy, and unfit. It's amazing how these things even themselves out.
