As somebody who still gets the jitters when crossing a road, the concept of motocross is totally alien to me.

Why anyone would want to risk life and limb on a two-wheeled death-trap is beyond my comprehension, so you could safely say that games like Trial Xtreme 2 Winter Edition are as close as I'm likely to get to the sport.

A subtle expansion on the previous Trial Xtreme 2 title, this snow-covered update features more tracks, more stunts, and more broken bones. Your aim is to guide your rider from one end of the course to the other, being as careful as is possible to avoid mashing his face into the asphalt after a massive jump.

On yer bike

Acceleration, braking, and jumping are controlled by on-screen buttons, while you can influence the position of your rider in the saddle using either tilt controls or virtual buttons.

Although it's fun to twist and turn your phone around in order to achieve the perfect handling, we actually found it better to use the button option, as it offers more control.

With 30 new stages to complete, Trial Xtreme 2 Winter Edition certainly offers plenty of new content for fans of the franchise. The game's biggest failing is that it never feels as if it packs enough new features to justify its price tag - it would have been better for these winter levels to have been offered to existing Trial Xtreme 2 players as an in-app purchase.

Snow dog

The game is also affected by a few bugs here and there - it crashed on us a couple of times, forcing a restart. Reports are also filtering in from other players that the game engine is inflected with physics glitches which can make some of the more difficult levels trickier than they should be.

Despite the rough edges, Trial Xtreme 2 Winter Edition still manages to entertain. If you've already gotten along swimmingly with previous instalments, then there's little reason to doubt that you'll feel exactly the same way about this power-dusted semi-sequel - just don't expect anything fresh and new.

It doesn't reinvent the motorbike wheel, but Trial Xtreme 2 Winter Edition provides more petrol-fuelled hi-jinks for fans of previous games. We just can't shake the feeling that it would have worked better as a paid-for expansion to the existing Trial Xtreme 2 game
