Top 10 best puzzle games for iOS and Android

Rack your brains

Top 10 iPhone charts iPhone, thumbnail 1
If somebody asked you to name a mobile puzzle title, you'd most likely respond with Cut the Rope or Angry Birds.

Why wouldn't you? They've dominated the App Store and Google Play for a number of years now.

Over the past year or so, though, new and old mobile game developers alike have produced some truly fantastic puzzle games for iOS and Android.

Here are ten of our favourites...

The Room
By Fireproof Games - download for iPhone, buy for iPad, or buy for Android

In this gorgeous-looking point-and-click puzzler, you're tasked with - surprise, surprise - solving puzzles en route to opening a series of mysterious boxes.

At review, we called The Room good enough to "convert all but the most stringent naysayers to its cause".

Murder Files
By Relentless Software - buy for iPhone and iPad

A quaint English village called Little Riddle has been rocked by a series of grisly murders, so you, a Poirot-style detective from a big-wig agency, must solve puzzles in order to find out whodunnit.

Murder Files is split up into six different episodes, each of which features 12 unique word-, logic-, and maths-based puzzles for you to crack.

Up to the job?

Jacob Jones and the Bigfoot Mystery
By Lucid Games - buy for iPhone and iPad

Much like the abovementioned Murder Files, Jacob Jones and the Bigfoot Mystery is jam-packed with riddles, sliding puzzles, and all manner of other tricky brainteasers.

The storyline of this colourful title revolves around Jacob, a brand-new "Brave" at Camp Eagle Feather.

Playing as Jacob, you have to remove the shroud of mystery that surrounds your temporary summer home.

Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes
By Tag Games - buy for iPhone and iPad

Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes is an action-packed tactical RPG with one major USP.

Every time you enter a battle in Clash of Heroes, you're presented with a match-three-style game board that's split into two distinct parts, i.e. the top (where your enemy lines up) and the bottom (where your forces make their stand).

Your aim in this title, then, is to deplete your foe's HP. In Clash of Heroes, you do this by matching three or more of your similarly coloured troops, and watching as they attack.

Scurvy Scallywags
By Gilbert & Kauzlaric - buy for iPhone and iPad

There are tons of match-three puzzle games on the App Store, but few are as inventive as Scurvy Scallywags, the latest pirate-themed puzzler from Monkey Island creator Ron Gilbert.

Anyway. Each time you manage to make a match, the on-screen game board folds in on itself, propelling your grog-swilling avatar into different positions.

This mechanic enables you to collect glittering treasures, nab power-ups, and even scrap with undead monsters.

Cut the Rope: Time Travel
By ZeptoLab - buy for iPhone, buy for iPad, or download for Android

You should all know the drill here. Get a piece of delicious-looking candy into the gorgeous gaping gob of a cuddly monster. Phew.

In this latest instalment of the Cut the Rope franchise, you travel back in time to a range of locations (including Ancient Greece and a pirate ship) in your attempts to help protagonist Om Nom feed his ancestors.

The Journey Down: Chapter One
By SkyGoblin - buy for iPhone and iPad

In the first episode of The Journey Down, you lead a gas station worker called Bwana and his sidekick Kito on an adventure around Kingsport Bay.

Their mission? To uncover a missing journal and reveal the true fate of their long-lost father, Captain Kaonandodo.

This point-and-click adventure is heavily influenced by black African culture. In fact, it features a reggae soundtrack, and the game's character and pattern designs are inspired by carvings and masks from the Makonde and Chokwe tribes.

Angry Birds Star Wars
By Rovio - buy for iPhone, buy for iPad, or download for Android

Angry Birds Star Wars is, arguably, the best instalment in Rovio's ever-popular physics-puzzler franchise.

Why? Well, it features locations, characters, and sounds from - plus plenty of references to - George Lucas's infamous faraway Star Wars galaxy. There are even lightsabers.

Yep, really.

Ace Attorney Trilogy HD
By Capcom Mobile - download for iPhone and iPad

Ever watched CBS's The Good Wife or any other courtroom drama and wished it was you pleading your case to the judge and jury?

If so, Ace Attorney Trilogy HD is definitely the simulation-cum-puzzler for you.

In this title, you play as Phoenix Wright, an up-and-coming lawyer who's tasked with interviewing suspects, finding evidence, and - ultimately - trying to win courtroom battles.

Lazy Raiders
By Sarbakan - buy for iPhone and iPad or download for Android

Spin and flip the world around you in order to guide lazy archaeologist Dr Diggabone around more than 60 obstacle-packed mazes.

That's your aim in Lazy Raiders.

Dr Diggabone wants to retire early, you see, so it's up to you to help him find some lost ruins and recover a few extremely expensive relics.

Check out Sums Academy. It's a Sudoku like game with Tetris like mechanics. Very original, very cool...and first 21 levels are free to play.
