Striving for simplicity is a worthwhile goal for any mobile game developer, but it's not the be all and end all.

The developer of The Top Spot has clearly put a great deal of thought into making a simple game. The trouble is, this has been achieved to the exclusion of a great deal of fun.

A handful of coloured dots move back and forth along their set paths. When they meet, they overlap. You must observe this interaction and tap them in depth sequence, starting with the top-most dot.

There are tools that slow down or stop select dots, allowing you to manipulate their paths, but that's The Top Spot in its entirety.

You know the concept hasn't quite worked when you get through the levels just as quickly through trial and error using the restart button. An irritating ad system further loosens the game's tenuous grip on your attention.

Ultimately, The Top Spot resembles a stylish screen testing app as much as a mobile game.
