GDC 2016: The Frostrune is a Viking-inspired adventure full of facts and folklore

Product: The Frostrune | Developer: Grimnir Media | Genre: Adventure
For: iPhone   Also on: Android, iPad, Windows Phone

You know, i'm still not sure if the year walk at the heart of Simogo's Year Walk is a real piece of Swedish folklore, or just some made-up video game nonsense.

I'm much more confident about the myths, legends, and artefacts at the heart of Viking-style point-and-click adventure The Frostrune.

The developer has a team of Norse nerds and historical researchers who have worked hard to make sure everything in the game is an authentic representation of either Viking history or Viking myth.

So the buildings you explore, the creaky mechanisms you use, and the items you find are all based on real artefacts. And any supernatural elements you stumble across are based on stories.

Even the language of the game is translated into old Norse by researchers.

Frostrune

The game itself is a dashing first-person adventure set on a lonely, wind-swept island. You've been shipwrecked and the nearby settlement is abandoned.

So you'll have to explore, solve puzzles, collect objects, remember patterns, and uncover hidden treasures to move on. Fans of games like Year Walk and The Room will no doubt dig it.

The Frostrune should be out later this year. We'll let you know.
