Potions are going to be pretty essential to your progress through dungeons and quests in The Elder Scrolls: Blades. Getting a health boost is most important, but certain situations call for certain measures.

You will of course have multiple types of potions to use to regain health, Magicka or Stamina, and the icons to use these will pop up on the screen when you are low on any of those. But there are of course some rules to keep in mind.

First off, potions don't automatically regenerate. Don't use them too hastily, because you'll just quickly run out. In addition to that, Magicka and Stamina regen quickly once you're out of combat, so you don't really need to use them near the end of fights.

Health is harder though. Without enough food laying around dungeons, it can be tough to ensure you have enough health to keep going, which makes the health potions the most important.

But in addition to those, you can have Resistance potions, which can resist elemental attacks or give you status buffs, which can greatly help in select situations.

For example, if a quest warns of poison using enemies, well, maybe a poison resist potion is in order. Just be sure to only use them when they're really necessary.

1
Health over all else

As has been mentioned, the health potions will always end up being the most essential to your survival.

Without health, well, you're dead, and even then you shouldn't use them unless it's absolutely necessary.

Health potions can be bought or made at the Alchemist's shop, or found in chests. In jobs I wouldn't recommend using them, instead saving them for those difficult main missions.

2
The rest

Okay so that leaves the Stamina and Magicka potions, and when it best to use those. Again, they're best saved for main missions, but since these regen fast, you don't need them as often.

Having said that, you should absolutely whack out your Stamina and Magicka potions when the time calls for it. For example, if you're going up against a Wispmother or a Troll which needs Magicka spells to really damage them.

You likely won't need your Stamina skills as often, but you should still puff up your Stamina if you're desperate to use Adrenaline Dodge or another damaging move to finish the fight.

3
The power to resist

Resistance potions will be the ones you use least, but probably should use more often. If you're going against tough elemental enemies, the resist potions will make you live much longer, and make you much more threatening in a fight.

These are especially important against powerful elemental enemies, such as Wispmothers, who use Frost attacks.

But it can be equally useful against other enemies that use elemental abilities, such as the Thalmor and even the Goblin casters. Cheeky blighters.
